Show Me Mount Mitake 御岳山

Thought I would show my favorite place to take a break from the concrete and humidity of Tokyo. I used to love to take day trips to Mitake.

This is the beginning of the hiking trail.

Nice to see some daikon hanging around.

Love the grass roofs on some of the houses in the mountain village.

Some tengu sculptures hanging out in a shop window. I always take pictures of stuff I want to buy but feel like I shouldn't spend the money .

The forests of Mitake are famous for momonga or flying squirrel.

There are several trails where you can explore the forest. I was really tempted to just reveal everything of interest here but I think I will just leave you with this last picture. I highly recommend a visit to Mt. Mitake!

This is my entry for Show Me Japan.

Epic Fail

So starting yesterday and all of today I've been working on oranges. These seem to be a standard thing to make out of clay. Well the first pair of oranges I made turned out beautifully. Nice orange translucent centers... The next batch made the same way turned out burnt looking... the horror.. hours of work destroyed in minutes... I can't understand why because I made these the same way as the first two. Anyway what did I do? I started over. Will upload final oranges soon.

Nuts!

I've been in a fall mood lately and thinking of some fall themes for necklaces. Anyway along the way I decided to make some nut charms. Here is an idea of my working process. The nuts were really time consuming. Everything from the sculpting to the painting took longer than I would want to admit. I couldn't get the base color right for the walnuts and then I had the problem of making them appear matte. Currently working on solving the walnut color issue... but pretty satisfied with the pecans!

New Work!

So after discovering that I may not be able to find the czech crystals that I use to make my cupcake charms I felt like I needed to come up with some new ideas and stop relying on the same supplies too. I've recently been interested in gold as well. I've started bending wire, using beads and stones as well as manipulating findings to add more interest to my work. My current project is the banana necklace! :D

These are made by sculpting each individual banana shape and after baking the clay I paint on the details including the little seeds. After I have the banana slice look down, I use clay about the same consistency of chocolate and dip it just like the real thing. Then it goes back in the oven for a second time and it's finished!
